They can be positive, negative, or even neutral. As well as providing a comprehensive introduction to the link between thoughts, feelings, and behavior, it teaches fundamental CBT skills including: Automatic thoughts pop up in response to a situation or event, usually without us realizing we are having them. This guide is written for clients who are struggling with negative automatic thoughts. One of the best ways for them to do this is by learning to evaluate their thinking. While it may not be possible to prevent automatic thoughts, clients don’t have to accept them at face value, and can learn to interpret events differently. For each item, respondents are asked to indicate how frequently each thought occurred during the past week (1 not at all, 5 all the time). Biases are very common (and minor biases aren’t a problem) but more substantially biased thinking can cause significant difficulties. Automatic thoughts questionnaire-negative (ATQ) : The ATQ is a 30-item 5-point self-report scale that assesses the frequency of NATs. ![]() In this way, biases (typically called unhelpful thinking styles or cognitive distortions) can influence how people think. Introduce the worksheet and read the introduction paragraph with them. These thoughts may not be accurate, and are simply ‘best guesses’ or ‘opinions’ about the meaning of events. Before introducing the worksheet, educate your client about automatic negative thoughts and how challenging negative thoughts can help them cope with their challenges. Automatic Negative Thoughts, or ANTS, can guide our behavior without our realizing, and can be hard to control. In fact, it mostly consists of quick, automatic thoughts, which are called negative automatic thoughts (or ‘NATs’) when they cause distress. Thinking isn’t always slow or deliberate. The problems associated with identification can be derived from an understanding of the characteristics of NATs. To paraphrase the great cook Mrs Beeton, first catch your thought. Perhaps most important to CBT, when a person changes their thoughts, they will also change their emotions and behaviors. Try to take a middle-ground in situations where you are usually too rigid. Identification of Negative Automatic Thoughts The identification of negative automatic thoughts is a key skill for both therapist and client if CBT is to be effective. ![]() This idea forms the basis of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). People often assume that the way they think is accurate, but in reality, thoughts are not facts. The cognitive triangle illustrates how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors affect one another. Clients may often feel distressed or overwhelmed by their thoughts, and problems like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, paranoia, and even reactions to physical pain can be the result of particular ways of thinking. Thinking allows people to plan, solve problems, create, or imagine, but it can cause problems when it leads to excessive worry, rumination, or self-criticism.
